Next time you change the oil and it has been refilled with 4 qts ( 3.9 for the anals), with the bike on the side stand, pull the stick and mark the true full point with a file. From then on you can check the oil with the bike on the side stand. 2-'04 VTX 1300 S's, 1- 2002 VTX 1800 R.

Lube the O ring with oil on the oil filter and spin it back on 1/4 turn past hand tight. Do not use synthetic oil in a new motor. Not until you get at least 3,000 miles on the odometer. After that, it is OK to use synthetic. You may want to change the rear end oil every 6,000 miles.
