If you pass the disks through to OMV, then you would have to serve the space back to proxmox using nfs or tgt. If the VM isn't running, that is weird. If you create large virtual hard drives for the OMV VM, then proxmox loses space and it is difficult to take it back. Proxmox cannot access the files on those drives directly and would need nfs ...

I installed OpenMediaVault in the first place, run, configure and big wow! Only 16.7W in idle without spindown! However, I could not convince myself to OpenMediaVault. Open Media Vault or TrueNAS. I've both tested OMV en TrueNas over the past 2 weeks and I've found that TrueNAS has some weird bugs which I didn't see on OMV. Now I know that OMV is based on the Debian kernel and to work with ZFS i've had to install the ZFS plugin etc (which btw works great allthough it isn't fully customizable)No. Adding disks into a pool gives those disks entirely to ZFS and they will be formatted accordingly, no original content will remain. three 1TB SATA Hard Drives.
